Comments : Hi all you 39er’s,
REunion, well after the BIG one it was always going to be a hard act to follow, and then we had the dreaded covid,
but as we all know time and tide wait for no one, even us!! Therefore a number of us have agreed to meet up again this year and would be delighted if you could also join us. Apologies for the late notice but we have been waiting for confirmation the Bev and Neil would be able to make it from Oz.

We are intending to meet again at the revamped Leonardo hotel at Hinckley, formerly Jury’s Inn Hinckley Island. Check in on the Friday 2nd of June, until after breakfast on the 4th of June and visiting the NMA on the 3rd please feel free to join in with whatever part of the weekend suits you.

All accommodation will need to be booked individually so that you can choose the room type/meal plan that suits you and these costs will need to be covered by you. We intend to negotiate on your behalf with the hotel a suitable rate for the Saturday evening private dinner and the costs for this will be notified as soon as we have them. To facilitate this we require a response from you as soon as possible.

The planned format for the 2 days is;
Meet and greet check in Friday morning, slake your thirst in the bar, and a light bite with mates and partners, stow your clobber, relax as you feel free.
Informal dinner in the restaurant, at your leisure, return to the bar to meet late arrivals, bed at your convenience.
Saturday, leisurely breakfast, then a drive in our own vehicles, after making sure everyone has a ride, out to the National Memorial Arboretum,
gather at the Royal Engineers memorial, lay a wreath and pay our respects, to our fallen brothers.
Please then feel free to have a light bite, and wander the grounds at your leisure, before returning to Hinckley.
A private dinner, subject to numbers, whilst drinking too much and telling everyone how great we were?are?
Bed at your own pace, breakfast and then depart for home.

Please answer ASAP, cheers

Comments : Hi All, sorry dont go with that suggestion, at all, will be in the UK end of May and will be attending the memorial at the NMA on the 30 and will be staying somewhere local as will be meeting other members of the REunion committee to put another REunion together in the same type of format as previous with us all together, as we feel we would still like to pay our REspects, and would prefer a summer event in any eventuality. Will email all shortly, cheers Mac, on behalf of your committee.

Comments : Hi all, a suggestion has come forward that we have a final get together as age etc is taking it's toll.

So the proposal is: October first weekend in Birkenhead. Friday evening informal get together and meal

Saturday - Ride the Mersey ferry to Albert Dock (shops, pubs, maritime Museum and so much more) then ferry back

Evening set meal but casual dress and a disco if you all want one

Sunday- final farewell after breakfast

NOW if you are interested I need to know soon by 10th of the month at the latest.

No idea of cost yet but it will once committed require a deposit and there will be an account you can pay into to ease payment rather than one go

So there you go thats what is on offer

Brummie

It is with great sadness that I have been informed of the death of Lt.Col. (Retd) Alan Skidmore R.E.
Alan had been ill for some time and passed away early yesterday morning (14/10/22).
He had a long and distinguished career in the Corps and was Mayor of Ripon in 1999 when the Corps celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Granting of the Freedom of the City of Ripon.
Funeral details will be posted when known.

Ladies and Gentlemen Last year Jay and Barry met up at the NMA on the 30 May to pay their respects to the boys and having sounded out, Jay and Barry have agreed to repeat the exercise again this year – the 55th Anniversary.
They thought if we let people know now there might be some others that want to make the pilgrimage. They have no intention of making any specific arrangements other than to say we will be there on the 30th May and to say at what time (TBC). Please notify Barry @ bashjalankuak@gmail.com if you would like to attend so that everyone will be on the same page.
I regret Bev and I will be unable to attend but our thoughts will be with you all. Lest we forget. Stay safe.

Many thanks to Brummy Wilson, Smitty et al who came to Frank Heath's funeral in Southport on May 21st. The sight of the RE flags moved me to tears.
> It was wonderful to hear again the stories and the names l remember from our courtship while he was in Aden and l was at college in Swansea. Tales of Q Lister, Paddy Minford, Taff Picton, brought back so much!
> I used to write letters to him on Swansea Borough Council loo roll (the hard stuff) and all my pals put rude additions and send them off to keep the spirits up. Once he replied with a letter soaked in some noxious local 'scent' (no, l didn't ask!) which nearly cleared the dining hall at breakfast!
> Have often thought of our good friends Dennis and Sylvia Burrows, and their Paul. We had some fun times in Osnabrück and Cove!
> Thanks again for the visits while he was ill, it meant such a lot to him and the boys to know dad was remembered, they want me to pass on their thanks.
> Best wishes to all who knew him.
> Sue.

He was medically discharged back in 1968 after treatment in a London hospital and still has problems today due to the head injury he received. He has very poor memory recall but looking through the photo's I took could recall Ratcliff, Alf Lister and Jake Farmer.
We are hoping he will be ok to attend the Reunion next year but will need our help to get around, as he has balance and mobility problems. Anyone who comes from or will pass by Little Hulton (near Bolton/Manchester) on the way to the bash who could transport him would be most appreciated.
Let me know. If you need his address or other details please e mail me as I won't put the here on the open web

Some of you may have received a bogus e mail claiming to be from my address, I was hacked from who knows where but BT have sorted and cleaned my mail account, so all is well now.

I will be sending a note to the hotel to thank them for their input into making our stay such a pleasant one. I hope those of you that were there have seen the group photo's and we will get them posted to this site as soon as we can.
We will start working on the next formal bash for 2015 very soon, so watch this space.
It was sad to learn that Titch Taylor had passed away. Those of you like me who had the pleasure of knowing him will have many tales to tell of the fun we had together. RIP Bob.
Finally, don't forget that I have asked for your memories on your experiences from the day you learnt that 39 was to go to Aden, through the training to deployment and back home again. I will be working then to collate everything into a book which we can publish for all to see on the service you provided to the crown.
Thanks again and keep smiling

As many of you know I with the help of others have been trying to trace Bob for quite some time so it was bitter sweet to succeed. RIP Bob

Comments : Hi everybody.
I hope you all had a great Christmas and I wish you all the best for the coming year.
I remember you all very well and have very good memories of my time with 39 Fld Sqn.
I served with the squadron for 6 years from 1963. I was on the MT working as driver, details clerk,POL,servicing and was also a radio operator.
I did basically the same in Aden with the emphasis on POL and servicing.
I remember keeping a camel spider under my bed in a shoe box. Huge starlit skys at night with stars that seemed close enough to touch. Electric storms over the Mountains. The three Somali lads that helped me service the vehicles. they were good lads, constantly on a high from chewing the leaves. Told me lots of stories about their life in Somalia and how they fled to Aden as refugees. I remember driving to the wells to pick up water if they hadn't blown them up and being stoned as we drove through the village.
I remember the time the outdoor cinema screen was shot up one night as we were watching a film. The time the Naafi tent caught fire and the free beers afterwards.
I don't know if any of you remember a group I played with back in Osnabruck called The Gentlemen led by Cpl Jimmy Rogers(PE Instructer and basket ball player) He and Vick Tinsley were top basket ball players. We played a lot in the coroporals mess ,Sgts mess and officer's club and the Sqn club. We also played in venues around Osnabruck and surrounding areas.
When I left the army after my 9 years I returned to Osnabruck to live and work for several years before returning to England to get married.
I'm happy and contented now with a good family and in good health living near Harlow in Essex.
So I hope you all have a good year and maybe I will hear from some of you. It would be nice.
Cheers for now.

Look forward to seeing a good turnout again with some of the ex 39rs who missed the last one I still have contact with a couple will try and get them to come this time.

Comments : Had a welcome telephone chat with Mac this morning and Bev is responding well to treatment and I passed on our collective good wishes to her.
On the next reunion, location comments taken on board and will look to see what I can come up with. As for timimg, looks like we shall be going for end of May/beginning of June
Can I ask that you all look at ways of finding more of the lads so we can get an even bigger turnout?

Comments : Hi All, Bev is continuing with the chemo and thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and wishes. Doesn't complain just gets on with it!! Have spoken to Mike (Wilson) re the REunion and have suggested that as Bill Nixon is going to pop in to Ramside Hotel in Durham to catch up with 60 Sqn's REunion in 2 weeks time, and I have already given it a tick of approval, Bill can do a recce and update on the facilities. Hinckley was great but a long way to travel for the northern part of the UK lads and lassies. However Mike has the baby and I will support anything that he wants to do, and to that end will be passing on every-bodies contact details to him unless I receive anything to the contrary. I am so glad we are not waiting and grateful to the guys that have got it kick started. Bev and I are now officially BOOKED IN for the 2013-39 Field Squadron. RE. ADEN REuion. Find some more faces please. See you there!! Kind REgards Mac

Comments : agree with Bill Nixon middle of the uk would be better Leeds or Sheffield which as excellant facilities in most of their hotels, the hotels in the canal basin area of Sheffield are very good + very good selection of shops (not forgetting the ladies) all the best hotels are within five minutes walking distance from central sheffield including the train station and bus depot which is served by national express. aiports Sheffield and Doncaster are a taxi drive away and also 5 minutes to central Sheffield from the M1 and A1/M turn offs. You have got to remember there were lads in the squdron from Scotland and the north and none of them got to the last reuion!!! so if you think midway, Leeds or Durham is about it.

We have had some mini reunions of ex Aden 10 Squadron lads and it´s great to see the Sapper spirit and sense of comaradeship and humour is still very much alive.

Comments : Hey Mike,

It's Joe coming at you from Downtown Basra, Iraq.
I get your point, however it often happens post reunions, when people have not seen each other for a long time.
At the time it is fantastic to see people, and how they have faired. They have however well defined lives, and situations, partners, wives, mature families etc. They take a few days out of that lifetime to revisit a slot in time, which they had drawn a veil over, selectively forgotten.
It was a very emotional time for people, some more than others, and more than most would admit.
The post reaction is one of one of quiet reflection for some time, for most.
in awhile the guys will come back to it, and get back to the promises they made to keep in contact. You also have to accept the fact that, some people will not resurface, the reasons are various, and there perogative. Lets hope they few, and wish them health and happiness.
I will be in Oz next month, may not get to see Mac, will call him.I will be back home in December, we will touch base, and go to Blackpool to see Paul Harbron. Meantime, stay safe and well Mike, have a pie for me next time you are on Wigan pier.

Roy Haswell (Corp) is 5th from right in the back row of the main Squadron photo and 4th from left in the front row of the Troop 3 photo on page 5. I have now passed on information to him about this site and hope he will enjoy browsing it and remembering many old faces and will hopefully add his own photographs soon.

It was great to hear that there will be a re union

Meeting up with Dave Lindsay and Derek Emerson last year was brilliant. Mind it some task catching up on close to 40 years. But we certainly were able to re live some of the good times plus our stories grew longer. Have been receiving some interesting emails which have been great for stimulating the brain.

If the re union is anything like meeting up with Dave and Derek again it promises to be a great weekend. My very best wishes to all of 39 Field Squadron

Does anyone remeber if 1st QDG's were based at Habilayn? I believe C Sqn were there at the time of the ambush.

Also, Lt Richard Fawcus and Spr Ronald Wardropper were mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct at the same time as Ian Scott's and Mike Conroy's citations. Does anyone know if they were members of 39 Field Squadron?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Comments : Dear All,

Rather than give you a long list of questions, I'll post a few questions at a time, if that's o.k. Some questions might not seem relevent, but I need to try and build up a complete picture of the events of that day:

Q.1: How many men were in the RE convoy? Mike Conroy's citation mentions the convoy was split into two groups, how many were in each group? Also, two small sections of FNG's, how many were there?

Q.2: Lt Conroy's citation mentions the C.O of 39 Field Squadron arriving at the scene, what was his name?

Q.3: How far from Habilayn was the convoy when they were attacked?

If anyone can give me any information with regards to the above questions, that would be great.

Regards

Richard

Dear Mr McLean,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you via email regarding 39 Field Sqn's time in Aden. My name is Richard Stockley and I'm a writer/journalist and ex-REME. I'm currently researching a book about the Westland Scout helicopter during conflict. At the moment I'm looking into the events of 30th May 1967, where Lt Ralls, Army Air Corps earned a DFC while flying a Scout. After reading your entry on the 'Britain-Smallwars' website, the action was more widespread and intense than I initially realised, given Lt Conroy's MC and Sgt Scott's MM.

Would you mind at all if I asked you some questions about the events of 30th May 1967?

Regards

Richard Stockley

I am from Falmouth, Cornwall originally and after a lot of travelling have settled in Düsseldorf, Germany. Didn´t have any dealing with 39 Sqn as I was posted back to 1 Trg Regt at Cove in January 67. I think you might have taken over some of our equipment. Good luck 39ers! UBIQUE

Comments : I'm pretty sure I spent some time with 39 in Aden (Al Mila)? I also did some time in Aden with 10 Airfield Squadron RE this is what confuses me. Could someone confirm to refresh my memory. As far as I remember I was in 37 Field Squadron in Osnabruck and was transfered to 39 for the Aden posting. We were shipped out to Trucial Oman States, Sharjah, when the evacuation of Aden started. Would this be '67 or even earlier? I was demobbed in '68. I've come full circle, I retired a few year ago and was so bored I went back to work with my old company and am at present in Abu Dhabi, same area as my last posting in the RE's. Good luck with the site. I seem to recognise one guy in the picture, 1st left in the 4th row, is that Pete Reed???
Cheers George

Well done with the site.

Comments : part of an advance guard as a 20 yr old from osnabruck to aden for 3 troop in 67.
Then convoyed up country to Radfan with the sqn.

Often wondered where the rest of the boys ended up as I went straight into survey training at military college Chatham when we got back. I demobbed late 68 before the squadron went to Ireland.

After 40 yrs the memory fades but rememer the corp, scouse and lance corp from the Black Watch, Sgt Scott, paddy and "Ginge" Panter.

A lot of water under the bridge since we were all together. Those were the days! Brummie Wilson do you remember when we drove home from Osnatraz in your Fiat 650 sewing machine with only 3 gears! With me holding a snooker cue out of the window cause it wouldn't fit in the car!! Fantastic. I have started attending the RE footballers get together at Chatham on cup final day and its great, haven't bumped into anyone from 39 yet though.

Have been having a battle with the big C recently but am turning the corner and would love to hear from those who remember me.

Well done with the site Mac. Keep it up.
